Beginnings breeding RR in Ukraine

— the first person to work towards the development of the breed RR
In fact, first RR appeared in Ukraine in the year of 1994… First female was imported from USA by sailor, she was without documents and first experiences were very far from breeding that is confirmed to be as “right” breeding now. That female had nice pedigree, but she was imported without docs and all her progeny was also out of FCI registration. It is a pity, that today also there are some “wild” breeders in Ukraine and «occasional» matings also exist.
First dogs with documents were imported to Ukraine just in the end of 90th.
From Russia, Sweden , South Africa.
In 2002 the first FCI registered litter was obtained in Ukraine. Breeder of the litter was Kirill Korotkov, Kiev , Ukraine . Dam was Simbashana ‘s Olga, she has just one litter in her life. Sir was Sweden imported male LOVFALLAN’S Master who was living in Moscow.
6 boys were born. And one from them was kept by the breeder , and this male became RCAC winner at Euro Dog Show 2004. It was first time when dog of Ukrainian breeding became prize — winner of big international show abroad .
Only several last years several Ukrainian dogs began to participate in big shows with excellent results – so we can see real progress of breeding here. First big success came to Ukraine in 2009 : the biggest show winners titles were given to Ukrainian Dogs — Heshimayakimba Grand Aquarius ( SA Import ) became Eurasia Champion in Moscow, Konsuello Flying Legs became Europe Champion in Dublin, Aresvuma Zulu Zuka (Russia import) became World Champion in Bratislava. And there was Ukrainian bred dog among them– Konsuello was born in Ukraine. She was the first dog, who began to present Ukraine so successfully at International Shows abroad. Konsuello was born in 2004, from mating her mother Rosita with USA imported male – Boston (he was living in Russia , Moscow) . She became Europe Champion, Interchampion, Multichampion, EDS (2xRCW, 2007 and 2008) and Eurasia’ prize-winner(2xRCACIB). Konsuello is also a working dog (obedience training). Mother of Konsuello — Rosita also was born in Ukraine from Russian imported parents with American lines.
In the year 2009 owner of Konsuello Flying Legs, Tatyana Maryina, had registered kennel name “Lion Chaser” and bred her only litter from Konsuello. Father of the litter was Tina Trading Sharl (Russia, Moscow) , it was line breeding to USA lines of Boston (Mshindajis kennel). 3 of the 5 puppies in this litter are Champions of the breed now. The most successful is Multich. Abeni Zema Lion Chaser. She is owned, handled and bred by Tatyana Maryina. Zema became BOB on Speciality Show in Paris (WDS-2011).
— Clubs were established when that exist
We tried to organize the club, but in fact we haven’t finished this idea. To tell the truth, it was my idea, which was supported by Tatyana Maryina, but we have not much dogs to work with and not much real RR people… So, now everything is in process. We organized some RR specialty shows, but for you to understand the situation, we had about 30 dogs maximum there… So, now it is just a process of development….

— Breeding RR
We have just several breeders who are making health tests and have the ideas of breeding . But they are really trying hard. Lets take the last successes on WDS-2011 in Paris. At 2 shows out of 3 there Ukrainian dogs won BOB. Heshimayakimba Grand Aquarius ( SA Import , living in Ukraine ) became BOB of Championship of France and Abeni Zema Lion Chaser became BOB of club show there.
— Conditions for breeding
In fact we have no special conditions. For the UKU to register the litter it is enough FCI recognized pedigree and to be the member of the club(not RR club, just UKU(FCI).
— Code of Ethics
We really have not much people who are really in the breed, and all dogs you can see on International shows abroad, all of them are bred right and according to Code of Ethics (with conditions it is usually included in other countries clubs). But I have already said — it is just some dogs… and some breeders…. And it is possible to understand from before and below said one interesting fact: even our most famous females never were mated more than 3 times in their life. Mostly it was just one litter per life, just for idea and for “ourselves” to have a logic continuation…
-Testing HD, ED, OCD, others…???
Yes, but it depends on breeder opinion. We are not obliged. HD, ED, OCD – we can check here in Ukraine.
For other tests (eyes, thyroid, DM, DD, etc)- a lot of reputable breeders from different breeds go to Hungary or Poland or some test we can make using the post. We have laboratory in Kiev which is sending samples to Germany. It is possible to send to USA also. But everything is up to the breeder.

Every year the day of RR is take place near Kiev. And every dog can be tested there by reputable trainer (more then 10 years in RR training) – Alexei Bordunov and his team – training center “Fenix”.
But in fact, we knows one each other, not much excellent RR in Ukraine, so… all problems are also known.

— The number of puppies in the last years …
I think not more than 10 litter per year… but just half of them is cost attention of breed’ fans. There is not much excellent females with excellent pedigrees… I believe that females are very important for the right development of breed. Not just the «titled» father can do everything, a female must be also of a proper quality for breeding.
— The main problems in breeding/what we face.
I can’t speak for everybody… Everyone knows his lines, but I think the main problem – that there is a lot of people, who wants to mate female but don’t understand nothing. They just want to mate “for the health”, or to “earn” money (there is such an opinion).
And after they understand own mistakes , but the puppies are already exist and they demands a lot of money and time , and every puppy need a right loving family , it is not game , it’s a hard breeder ‘ life . People must think about it before mating.
— The average price of puppies : standard /nonstandard
And here is the main problem. A lot of owners of excellent dogs don’t want to mate, because it is very expensive. It is very expensive to show dog (especially abroad),to pay for mating with proper male and may be to go to him for mating to another city or even abroad (with viza, etc), to do tests, to grow puppies up in a proper way … and after to clear up for yourself that in Ukraine you can find a lot of RR puppies (I will not speak about their quality and health ) for the price of 300 Euro or even less…. Yes, they are not influence on “right “ breeding, but they are fulfilling the market…. And then people don’t want to buy «show potential » puppy from really excellent titled parents because of the price — 1000 -1500 Euro.
In Ukraine it is rather easy to find homes for pet- class puppies… Mostly people say that they don’t want to show dogs, don’t want to breed, they just need a lovely pet dog. That is why all of us(breeders) are trying to fulfill the waiting list of «show potential» puppies’ owners even before mating of dogs…
Pet –class puppy ‘ price — depends on the puppy. It is easily possible to find ridgeless puppy at minimum price… Average price for pet class – up to 500 Euro )

Some others activities organized for the RR?
Every year (already during 3 years) we have the Day of RR – such a holiday of the breed.. In the beginning it was just a country party for the friends, but now this day gathers a lot of RR fan from different cities of Ukraine. It was my idea, but now more and more people helps with organization – and it is really excellent. I bought coursing machine and during 2 years we have not official, but a kind of amateur RR coursing competition. Day of RR includes different funny competitions, coursing, character tests for those who are willing to obtain a diploma, video and photo shootings. At recent RR day in Ukraine one ridgeback – young talented male Faira Alex Furuf Afric, Russia import to Kharkov , Ukraine ( Askot Alta Murano(CZ) x Chitonga Faira (Be)- presented to all others RR lovers a professional lesson of agility- he is participating in all-breed agility competitions in Ukraine and very successfully. Other young female — Amazing Panther from Qwandoya (Heshimayakimba Grand Aquarius x BAYO KABO SlunceZambezi (CZ)) with her owner demonstrated us free-style dancing. So, it is super that people understand – RR is very trainable dog and we must use this. We have several fan of hunting with RR, and several dogs are participating in hunting trials, but it is just because of enthusiasm of their owners- officially RR is not a hunting breed here and they can’t participate in official competition.
So, mostly all RR- people who are fan of shows and «show adrenalin» are gathering on big shows here. «Show» training is also a kind of sport with dogs, I think. But much more RR people are gathering at RR day in Ukraine, because there are coming not only show dogs but all Rhodesian Ridgebacks, with documents, without them, with ridge at their backs or without them — doesn’t matter. It is a non official RR party with a lot of fun for dogs and their owners. And it is nice to see as a lot of pet-class dogs are very talented in sport and different trainings and the main thing — as they loved by their owners .
